RESOURCES FOR EXPECTANT PARENTS

Many parents who are expecting a baby with Down syndrome like to take the time remaining in the pregnancy to learn about Down syndrome and find out what they need to do to prepare for their child. There are really two areas of information that can help expectant parents-- general information about Down syndrome and community supports that will be available when the child arrives.

General Information

Any of the resources suggested for parents with a new baby will be helpful to expectant parents, but here are a few that are great for those who receive a diagnosis prenatally.

The site Down Syndrome Pregnancy is a great start for those expecting a child who has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. There is a downloadable booklet called Diagnosis to Delivery: A Pregnant Mother's Guide to Down Syndrome which is very helpful. There are some medical conditions that can be more common for children with Down syndrome, so this guide will help you understand what doctors may be looking for in ultrasounds or after the birth of the child.

Published in 2008, Babies with Down Syndrome: A New Parent's Guide is a great start when learning about your child's condition. Find it in our Halton libraries:
